Caribe Drafting Stool

45” x 20” x 45” LWH
“The Caribe Drafting Stool was designed to address the problem of space constants for drafting work in small living areas.
At the end of 2023 I was divorced and living in a apartment above the Caribe Funeral Home on the northside in Chicago. The space was too small for me to set up a separate room for my studio so my drafting table was in my dining room with my kids's art supplies.
Eventually it became a cluttered mess for all my mail, art supplies, kids projects, and no longer useful for design work.
It became necessarily to save space whenever possible and I started thinking about the idea of mobile furniture and a modular table and chair.
I reflected on my experiences as a portrait and landscape painter.
Sometimes I carried a mobile easel outside to the park and people would crowd around to watch. I took painting very seriously and it seemed like sitting in front of my easel immediately designated me as an artist.
Inspired by that experience, I decided to design a piece that would evoke the same sense of identity while I engaged in drafting work. I envisioned something with the prominence of a director's chair or a podium. It needed to be sturdy yet portable and aesthetically pleasing when not in use.
I imagined a sleek design, with clean lines that would also integrate a small storage compartment for my tools—pencils, erasers, and sketchbooks.
This piece wouldn’t just be a functional object; it would serve as a statement on design work. It would transform my workspace into a place where I felt equally validated and inspired, much like I did when I set up my easel in the park.
